Submit all pages of Experiment 4 (Project 1) after completing pages 3, 4, and 5. Please write your answers neatly and in full sentences since this is a project report. Do not attach pictures to the report.
Please answer these questions in full sentences based on your procedure and observations of the project.
1. What is the chemical composition of the eggshell? Give name and formula of the major compound in the shell.
2. What is the composition of vinegar? Give name and line bond formula of the organic compound in vinegar. Identify the functional group present.
3. What is your immediate observation, when the 2 eggs are place in vinegar? Please take a picture of the eggs at this stage and embed the picture in the Project 1 area.
4. What unit learning objective does question 3 cover from unit 1? Please write the learning objective from the resources area.
5. How long did it take to remove the shell completely? Did you have to intervene so that the shell is removed uniformly?
6. Write a balanced chemical equation for the reaction of the egg shell and the household chemical. Classify the type of reaction involved.
7. What unit learning objective does question 6 covers from unit 2? Please write learning objective from the resources area.
8. Movement of solutes and solvents happen via a membrane. Where is the membrane in the egg? What does it look like and feel to touch?
9. What hypotonic solution did you use for your experiment? What happened to the size of the egg after treatment in hypotonic solution used? Please take a labelled picture of the egg treated with the hypotonic solution and embed the picture in the Project 1 area.
10. What hypertonic solution did you use in the experiment? What happened to the size of the egg after treatment in hypertonic solutions used? Please take labelled pictures of the egg treated with the hypertonic solution and embed the picture in the Project 1 area.
11. How long did it take to soak the naked egg in the two solutions (hypotonic and hypertonic) to make the observations?
12. What unit-learning objective do question 9 & 10 cover from unit 2? Please write the unit learning objective from the resources area.
13. Give an example of one other household chemical (besides vinegar) that may be used to remove the eggshell?
14. Did you encounter any unexpected result during this experiment? Suggest any changes in procedure to overcome the unexpected result.
15. In your own words explain why does the naked egg change sizes in hypotonic and hypertonic solutions? What scientific term is used to describe the egg after the treatment with these solutions?
16. Give one example of an application of osmosis in our everyday lives. Explain how osmosis works in your application.
