An egg has a semipermeable membrane that responds to diffusion of ions, small polar molecules and osmosis of water. In this experiment we are going to use the egg to represent a cell. The membrane is exposed, by chemically removing the shell with vinegar. The shell provides support and protection for the egg. The membrane under the shell is semipermeable and controls what enters and exits the egg (cell). The membrane allows certain nutrients and toxins to enter or leave the cell via diffusion. There is also diffusion of water molecules through the membrane called osmosis. Once the shell is removed, we will test the membrane by placing the shell-less eggs (naked eggs) in hypotonic and hypertonic solution.
This experiment will meet objectives from unit 1 and 2. In order to understand the theory of this experiment you will listen to several web lectures from Khan Academy, read the procedure provided, and perform the experiment at home. The report for the project is due in two weeks.
