Pre-laboratory Assignment # 3 (This assignment is due at the start of lab session)

    1. Find the electronegativity (EN) of each atom in the following compounds. Find the difference in electronegativity (DEN) between the atoms in each pair. Predict whether the bond between the two atoms is ionic, polar covalent or nonpolar covalent.

    Compound EN1 (atom 1) EN2 (atom 2)

    ΔEN = (EN2 – EN1)

    Bond Type

    K-F
    H-Br
    Cl-F
    Cl-Cl

    2. What is the difference in electronegativity in a nonpolar covalent bond? -------------------

    3. What is the difference in electronegativity in an ionic bond?  --------------------------------

    4.  In general, what type of bond is formed when a metal bonds with a nonmetal?  ----------------------

    5. In general what type of bond is formed when a nonmetal bonds with a nonmetal?  -------------------

    6. Refer to the periodic table in order to predict the number of valence electrons for each of the following elements:

    (a) oxygen       -------------                                          (b) nitrogen                 --------------

    (c) carbon        -------------                                          (d) chlorine                 --------------

    7. Draw condensed structural formula for each of the molecules whose line bond structures are shown.

    8. Define the following terms. Please answer this question in full sentences.

    (a)   covalent bond

    (b)   polar covalent bond

    (c)   octet rule

    (d)   single bond

    (e)   double bond

    (f)    triple bond

    (g)   molecular formula

    (h)   structural formula

    (i)    lone pairs

    9. What is the trend in electronegativity as atomic number increases?

    (a) In a period (row)?

    (b) In a group (family)?
