Implication of Properties
Properties of a material dictate its manufacturing, application, marketing, and distribution. Social, commercial, and business aspects of a material also depend on its properties.
Properties and Production
All substances are either derived from mining, or manufactured from a combination of resources. Properties of the reactants and end products decide their production process.
World leading Chemical producers are big companies with a lot of resorces and know how. Each of them have a unique line of products, because each product require special producing facilities and technology. For example, Arch Chemicals is a speicalty chemical producer. It provides microelectronic chemicals, water chemicals, and performance chemicals.
Many more chemical producers are listed on Chemical Companies on the Web. The United Nation ECE Chemical Industry deals with some special problems of the chemical industry. National chemical producers' association looks after the interest of its members within the national boundary. The Canadian Chemial Producers' Association has about 70 companies, with a total sale of $15 billion.
Properties and Applications
Chemical producers are often chemical users. Products of other companies become their raw material.
Today, Material Safety Data Sheets are available for any commercial chemicals. The MSDS provide information for handling as well as application, and care must be exercised and guidelines followed.
It is also a good idea to provide safety training for all the employees. The Basic Laboratory Safety Training at University of California, Davis provide an example.
The American Society for Testing and Materials is a developer and provider of voluntary consensus standards, related technical information, and services having internationally recognized quality and applicability that
- promote public health and safety, and the overall quality of life;
- contribute to the reliability of materials, products, systems and services; and
- facilitate national, regional, and international commerce.
The organization provided many publications.
- Discuss the particle emissions of unstable isotopes of one of the following elements: hydrogen, carbon, oxygen, lead, and uranium.
- Find out how fission nuclear reactors are designed and work.
- Find out the current research activities of fusion.
