10.8: Classification of Organic Reaction Mechanisms

  • All chemistry, except for nuclear reactions, involves electron transfers. Reaction mechanisms are step by step accounts of how electrons are transferred when bonds are broken and formed. Therefore they embody the rules of electron movement during chemical reactions. The following chart shows how mechanisms are classified depending on whether electrons are transferred singly or in pairs, and also according to other older criteria which nonetheless are still in wide use.
