10.7: Bond Dissociation Energies

  • The amount of energy required to break a covalent bond homolytically is referred to as bond dissociation energy (BDE). By definition, BDEs are always positive, since they represent the change in free energy resulting from the breaking of a bond, and breaking bonds always requires an enegy input.
