      Chemical reactions are accompanied by transfers of energy. Keeping track of heat flow and energy requirements is important for a full understanding of chemical processes. Energy is the capacity for doing work or supplying heat. When you fill your car with gas, you are providing it with potential energy. Chemical potential energy is the energy stored in the chemical bonds of a substance. The various chemicals in gas contain a much chemical potential energy that is released when gas is burned
