5. Integrating the Detector

    Note that these instructions are for the UV-vis Absorbance detector recommended in the parts list (Chrom Tech, Inc., Detector #D-500B, Flow Cell #9550-0155). Please consult the instrument manuals specific to the equipment you are using if using a different detector.

    1. Unscrew the plate that covers the detection window. If necessary, lightly clean the detection window using lens paper. Be GENTLE, YOU DO NOT WANT TO SCRATCH THIS WINDOW.

    2. Unscrew the top and bottom nuts that hold the vespel ferrules in place.
    3. Insert the capillary through the detection window.
    4. Thread the ferrules down the top and up the bottom of the capillary.
    5. Replace and tighten the screws. Make sure the window of the capillary is centered in the detection window.

    6. After screws are tightened, firmly pull up on the capillary to make sure it has not moved and it is secure. Place the cell back on the detector.
    7. The bottom of the capillary (extending from the bottom of the detector) should be submerged into the cathodic vial. Puncture the septa several times with tweezers before inserting the capillary. This will ensure that the capillary will not be plugged and that siphoning does not occur.

    8. The other end of the capillary should be inserted through the hole of the plexi-glass box, through the septa and submerged into the anodic reservoir.
    9. Use a lab jack under the collection vial to adjust the height of the vial so that the sample vial and collection vials are the same height. Be sure both ends are immersed at an equal depth in the reservoir vials.
