Statement of Christopher Gunn, taken at 2633 Carolina Ave., 4:00 pm, Wednesday, October 18.

How well did you know Samuel Herrick?

"He was a good friend of mine. We'd get together, play cards, stuff like that."

When was the last time you saw or spoke to Mr. Herrick?

"Well, he came to our regular poker game Monday night. That was the last time I talked to him."

Did he say or do anything unusual that might indicate he was feeling particularly depressed?

"No, I wouldn't say so. He'd had a tough week, since Donna moved out. He told me that evening that he'd just talked to her and that things might be looking up. He said that they were going to meet Tuesday night and go over some counseling options. He sort of scoffed about the counseling, but I think he really was considering it, and would have gone through with it. I know he had problems with Donna, and that he had a bit of a temper. He wasn't like that with us, but sometimes Donna would come along with Sam and we'd see a bruise. Sam was a good guy, but real likely to try and solve his problems in a physical way. I think he did genuinely love Donna, and it did hit him hard when she left. But since she'd agreed to this meeting, and was willing to still go through with the wedding after they'd seen a counselor, he was feeling better. At the end of the evening, I think he was feeling more worried about money. He lost quite a bit last night. He didn't say much about it, but he changed from being kind of cheerful about the situation with Donna to being real quiet and a bit short-tempered."

Did Sam mention what time this meeting with Donna was supposed to take place, or where?

"He just said something like, "Donna wants to talk about counseling some more; she's actually coming over tomorrow night," and I said, "That's great." That's as specific as he got."

And he didn't call you or give any other indication that the meeting might have been cancelled, or that something else disturbing had happened?

"I didn't hear anything more from him. We just played poker, drank some beer, and eventually went home."

Was Sam a heavy drinker, or a user of other drugs?

"He liked to drink, yeah. I don't think he ever used anything hard, though sometimes he had the stuff to sell to others."
