SPA 212 - Conversaciones sobre la migración

To finish the semester, we are going to have small group conversations about migration as the last grade or activity for the class. (In the syllabus, this is labeled Formal Discussion.)

This is the last assessment for the semester. There is not a traditional final exam.

Logistics

During Semana 17, you will meet online in Sakai Meetings with 1-2 classmates to talk about what you’ve learned about migration this semester in Spanish.

Go to the Sign-up in Sakai and choose a session. It is important that you plan to attend the session you choose as classmates will be depending on you to be there for the conversation at that time.

If you cannot make any of these time slots, let me know ASAP so we can make other arrangements. If you have a change of schedule that prevents you from attending at the last minute, you must contact me as soon as possible – and no later than the next day – to reschedule.

When it’s time for your session, log on to the Conversaciones Meeting in Sakai. Please arrive on time, and do not arrive more than 5 minutes early in case there is a previous session still in progress.

How to prepare

To prepare, you should think about your answers to the following questions:

Gather your thoughts and look for vocabulary words you might need. You can practice if that helps you feel more comfortable. However, do not write out a script to memorize or read during the conversation. This is meant to be a real conversation where you talk about the topic and ask/answer questions of each other.

How it is being graded

In everyday conversation, our goal is to understand what people are saying and say things in a way that people understand us. We try to use good language, but we also don’t use perfect grammar. As our ideas come out, we may shift mid-sentence…we make mistakes…we sometimes have to ask someone to repeat something or clarify what they’re saying…we may need to restate our idea to be understood.

This conversation is no different! There is no expectation of perfect or polished. I want to hear you communicating your ideas in Spanish. You can fumble, restate things, ask people for clarification…all those things that happen in everyday conversation are fine!

Your grade for this conversation will be based on the following:

The most important thing is that you stay in Spanish for the entire conversation.
