Diaspora is "the movement, migration, or scattering of a people away from an established or ancestral homeland" (Merriam-Webster). We use the word to refer to people from a certain place living elsewhere. For example, the Japanese diaspora refers to Japanese people who live outside of Japan. It often refers to their descendants as well, although typically once the cultural ties with their ancestral homeland fade, the term is less used. (For a much more detailed explanation of the term and its political debate, see The Political Importance of Diasporas by Migration Policy Institute (2005).)
