El Pretérito

The preterit is used to tell completed actions in the past focused on a particular time.

Regular verbs (two sets of endings, one for -AR and one for -ER+-IR)

HABLAR - I spoke, I did speak

Yo hablé Nosotros hablamos
Tú hablaste Vosotros hablasteis
Él / Ella / Usted habló Ellos / Ellas / Ustedes hablaron

 

CRECER - I grew, I did grow

Yo crecí Nostros crecimos
Tú creciste Vosotros crecisteis
Él / Ella / Usted creció Ellos / Ellas / Ustedes crecieron

 

Stem-changing Verbs (This only applies to -IR stem-changers. -AR/-ER stem-changers do not change in preterit.)

These are often called "shoe verbs" because only the bottom row make a spelling change.

DORMIR - I slept, I did sleep

Yo dormí Nosotros dormimos
Tú dormiste Vosotros dormisteis
Él / Ella / Usted durmió Ellos / Ellas / Ustedes durmieron

 

DIVERTIRSE - I had fun, I did have fun

Yo me divertí Nosotros nos divertimos
Tú te divertiste Vosotros os divertisteis
Él / Ella / Usted se divirtió Ellos / Ellas / Ustedes se divirtieron

 

Irregular Verbs (These verbs just do their own thing. )

This is a list you just have to memorize. There is no particular pattern or clue to tell you if a verb is irregular in the preterit.

TRAER - I brought, I did bring

Yo traje Nosotros trajimos
Tú trajiste Vosotros trajisteis
Él / Ella / Usted trajo Ellos / Ellas / Ustedes trajeron

 

HACER - I did, I made, I did make

Yo hice Nosotros hicimos
Tú hiciste Vosotros hicisteis
Él / Ella / Usted hizo Ellos / Ellas / Ustedes hicieron
