The final technique we will discuss is irony. Irony gets its own page because there are three types of irony:

• Verbal
• Situational
• Dramatic

So...Let's review each:

Verbal - The contrast between what is said and what is meant.

Situtational - The contrast between what is expected and what happens. Remember: if we expect it, it's not ironic!

Dramatic - The contrast between what the character thinks to be true and what we know as a reader to be true. The reader is in on a secret!
