The overall process of cellular respiration converts sugar into ATP using oxygen. This is an aerobic process, meaning it requires oxygen, and it takes place in the mitochondria.
| Before cellular respiration can occur, a process called glycolysis must take place. Glycolysis splits glucose into two three-carbon molecules and makes two molecules of ATP. Glycolysis takes place in the cytoplasm and does not need oxygen, this makes it an anaerobic process. |
