The overall process of cellular respiration converts sugar into ATP using oxygen. This is an aerobic process, meaning it requires oxygen, and it takes place in the mitochondria.

Before cellular respiration can occur, a process called glycolysis must take place. Glycolysis splits glucose into two three-carbon molecules and makes two molecules of ATP. Glycolysis takes place in the cytoplasm and does not need oxygen, this makes it an anaerobic process.
