Genes located on the same chromosome are called linked genes. The alleles for these genes tend to stay together during meiosis.  The closer two genes are on a chromosome, the less likely their alleles will be separated during meiosis.

Think about when you're at an event with friends. When you're standing in line with a larger number of people as it comes time to sit down, you're more likely to sit next to those you've been standing next to in line.
