This book is the derivative result of a failed experiment where a number of texts in various subjects were published by a commercial press under a Creative Commons license. This license is a form of copyright which allows others to modify (we hope improve) and share the book as long as there is proper attribution. All of the material on LibreTexts has such a copyright.

So who wrote the book? Well, the underlying text, Principles of General Chemistry, published under a the Creative Commons by-nc-sa 3.0 license, can be found at Lardbucket together with an explanation as to why, at least here, the names of the original authors and the publisher are not to be found. It was hoped that contributions would support the project.

Briefly put, the publisher changed its business model and now charges directly for the book both in electronic and printed formats. Andy Schmitz, who had created the Lardbucket archive of such books was asked by the publisher to remove the names of the publisher and authors from the material together with other identifying text. The publisher requested that where attribution was made it should be to anonymous authors.

LibreTexts and I naturally will follow the request of the publisher in this matter.

The text of this Atoms First edition has a number of modifications (I hope improvements) that I have made which can be identified by comparison with the text at Lardbucket. I started the modification process in html using KompoZer before having access to LibreTexts and thus the authoring sequence is not fully available here.

Let me also use this opportunity to acknowledge the help of Delmar Larsen, the Executive Director of the LibreTexts project who has held my hand electronically in putting this text together
