Essay
The Greenhouse Effect is the process by which radiation rays hit the surface of the planet. Energy is radiated into the atmosphere which warms the planet’s surface. Greenhouse gases create the greenhouse effect by absorbing infrared radiation. The different types of Greenhouse gases include Methane, Carbon Dioxide, Nitrous Oxide and Hydrofluorocarbons. Although the concentrations of greenhouse gases are relatively small, the small amounts can increase into larger amounts of concentration, which in turn absorb heat and continue to warm up the surface. Carbon is a main focus in global warming because of the abundance of it compared to the other greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. It lasts the longest. Roughly, about 400 parts per million are in the atmosphere. The amount of cars on the road everyday increase the amount of carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere, and will continue increasing.
Technology has advanced a lot in the last 200 years, as well as the amount of greenhouse gases released because of things like factories, cars, etc. Water levels are rising as Polar ice caps are melting. People are one of the main causes of so many greenhouse gases are released into the atmosphere by the amount of cars on the road, the amount of factories around the world, and smoking as well. During the carbon cycle, carbons are converted into the environment through the incorporation of carbon dioxide into living things. Burning fossil fuels is the main cause of global climate change because of all the air emissions that occur when they are burned. Burning fossil fuels releases even more carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. Fossil fuels are needed for transportation, industrial factories and the production of electricity, but at the cost of our environment. An alternative to fossil fuels is renewable energy sources so there isn’t so emissions lessen. It’s not going to happen overnight, but gradually changing sources could benefit the environment overtime.
One alternative source of power we can use is wind turbines which only require the winds to create energy. Downsides to this alternative are that some places get strong winds and some don’t, so the setup of wind turbines in the best location is priority to get the most energy out of it. Another alternative are solar panels, which can be installed into roofs so homes are powered by their own energy they generate. While they are costly, the benefits over time don’t compare to the one time cost of installation. Greenhouse gases also affect sea levels in a major way. The amount of greenhouse gases causing the earth to become warmer is causing water levels to rise each and every year. The acid base equilibrium allows them to neutralize, however if the buffering were to come to a stop, the ocean might not be habitable for its creatures anymore because the acidity of the ocean would increase. The concentration level would not remain low if the equilibrium isn’t leveled, the ocean would then become unbalanced.
