Micro Separations Distance: Capillary Electrophoresis

Accessibility to cutting edge technology is an important theme to the Holland Research Program. This lab is the first to develop and report protocol for a real-time web-based research program to share innovative technologies [1]. This expansion of distance technology is based on the use of low cost home-built separation instrumentation, synchronous video communication and asynchronous electronic supplements found on the website. These electronic supplements include instructions for the assembly and operation of a custom-built capillary electrophoresis instrument. To assist learning the basics of capillary and electrophoresis, we have included four guided learning modules.  The learning modules demonstrate fundamental mechanisms of transport in CE, instrumental components (Learning Module I), basic information about separation efficiency, methods of sample introduction (Learning Module II), fundamental mechanisms of MEKC, and a discussion of the derivation of retention factor (Learning Modules III, IV).  We have designed these modules for undergraduate students with a background in chemistry and access to the necessary laboratory equipment. Researchers in other fields or with different levels of scientific training may also find the materials useful.  Instructors or mentors using the material to train and assist undergraduate researchers will find instructor’s materials also posted on this website useful for implementing the laboratory training. The learning modules and operating procedures may be adapted to commercial instruments.
