Dye Lasers

  • The gain medium in a dye laser consists of organic dye molecules dissolved in a solvent.
  • Light, sometimes another laser, is used to excite the gain medium
  • Because fluorescence emission from organic dye molecules occurs across a broad range of wavelengths, dye lasers can be scanned (or “tuned”) to select a narrow band of emission light from across a wide spectral range
